Botswana Appoints Lesego Chombo As Minister of Youth & Gender Affairs

In a groundbreaking move that signals a progressive shift in leadership, Botswana President Duma Gideon Boko has appointed 26-year-old Lesego Chombo, the reigning Miss Africa and former Miss Botswana, as the Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs. The appointment was officially announced on Monday, marking a historic moment for both the nation and Chombo’s burgeoning career in public service.

“We are saying to young people: make yourself visible,” stated President Boko during the announcement, highlighting his commitment to empowering young leaders in Botswana.

Trailblazing Journey

Lesego Chombo’s path to this significant role is both impressive and inspiring. A specially elected Member of Parliament (MP), Chombo was chosen by political leaders as part of President Boko’s vision to infuse fresh, youthful energy into his administration. This appointment comes as President Boko begins his term with a focus on inclusive and forward-thinking governance.

According to the Botswana government, specially elected MPs are selected by leaders of political parties represented in parliament. Chombo’s nomination and endorsement by parliament underscore her exceptional qualifications and the confidence placed in her leadership.

A Leader Beyond the Crown

“I believe that all of my experiences, my qualifications as an attorney, even my experience as Miss World Africa and Miss Botswana, as a young person, really make me qualify,” said Chombo, reflecting on her new role. “But, most importantly, if not now, then when? I’m willing to learn and looking forward to learning and growing. This is the new Botswana that we strive for.”

Chombo’s diverse accomplishments include being crowned Miss Botswana in 2022 and earning the title of Miss World Africa in 2024. Her dynamic background extends beyond pageantry; she is an accomplished attorney and a tireless advocate for social development. Through the Lesego Chombo Foundation, she has demonstrated a commitment to uplifting marginalized communities and creating opportunities for underrepresented groups.

A New Era for Botswana

As one of six individuals nominated by President Boko and endorsed by parliament for specially elected seats, Chombo’s appointment marks a pivotal step toward gender inclusivity and youth representation. She is one of three women in this group, underscoring the president’s dedication to a balanced and equitable government.

Chombo’s journey from beauty queen to high-profile political leader symbolizes a new era for Botswana—one where youth, ambition, and dedication pave the way for national progress. Her leadership in the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs is expected to inspire countless young Batswana and signal a powerful commitment to fostering a society where talent and potential know no bounds.
