History and Facts about Pakistani Activist, Malala Yousafzai

International Malala Day is celebrated every year on July 12 to salute the Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai. Malala, who now works for the right of women to education across the globe was never allowed to enter school as a young girl.

In the honor of this young activist, the United Nations declared July 12, which is also her birthday and also Malala day to support world education.

Malala Day: History

The education activist Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban terrorists in October 2012 when she was 15 years old for supporting education of girls in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

She was flown to the United Kingdom for her treatment and miraculously survived. On 12th July 2013, Malala addressed young leaders of the world. The teenager received several rounds of standing ovations for her remarkable speech.

Day: Facts

Malala Yousafzai was born on 12th July 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan. Her father is Ziauddin Yousafzai, and her mother is Toor Pekai Yousafzai.

She has two brothers Khushal Yousafzai and Atal Yousafzai. Her father was a teacher in Pakistan and ran a school of his own.

She became the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Prize in 2014 at 17 years old.

After her attack, Malala moved to United Kingdom with her family. She joined the Oxford University to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

The father daughter duo established the Malala Fund to promote education for the girls. The Malala Fund invests in education activists and advocates.

Malala was designed as United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2017 by the Secretary General Antonio Guterres. She has honorary Canadian citizenship and also became the youngest person to address the House of Commons in Canada.
