Mahamat Deby Wins Presidential Election Of Chad

On Thursday, May 16, the Constitutional Council of Chad recognised Mahamat Idriss Déby as the President of the country with 61% of the vote, considerably ahead of his competitors Succès Masra and Albert Pahimi Padacké.

Despite slight revisions, the Council proclaimed the winner Mahamat Idriss Déby after reviewing and reaffirming vote tallies. Déby won with 61.03%, followed by his Prime Minister with 18.54% and Padacké with 16.93%. The voter turnout was 75.78 %.

Following the announcement, Succès Masra took to the social media to accept the verdict and urge his followers to remain calm and patient, focusing on political solutions rather than additional legal action.

The campaign of Padacké, as represented by his director recognised the decision of the Council, called for unity and asking the incoming president to handle the  difficulties of the country.

The camp of Mahamat Idriss Déby expressed joy, viewing the election as a fulfilment of  promise of the transitional period.

After the final results, Ndjamena remained calm and virtually abandoned in contrast to the rioting that followed the revelation of the provisional results, which resulted in at least 10 deaths.
