Ethiopian Airlines Partners With DRC Government to Launch Air Congo: A New Chapter for African Aviation.
Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most successful aviation group, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to launch a new national carrier, Air Congo. This strategic collaboration marks a major milestone in Ethiopian Airlines' ongoing mission to expand air travel across the African continent and enhance connectivity between countries.
Under the terms of the agreement, the DRC government will hold a 51% majority stake in Air Congo, while Ethiopian Airlines will retain 49% ownership and oversee the airline’s operations. This partnership aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ broader Vision 2035 strategy, which focuses on fostering collaboration with African governments to drive socio-economic growth through improved transportation infrastructure.
A Vision for Connectivity and Growth
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mesfin Tasew, expressed his enthusiasm about the launch, highlighting its significance for the DRC and the Central African region. "The establishment of Air Congo is a key part of our strategic plan to work closely with African governments and enhance air connectivity across the continent. This partnership will help to unlock new opportunities for trade, investment, and tourism, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region," Tasew said.
With its focus on domestic connectivity, Air Congo will initially serve seven airports within the DRC using a fleet of two Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The airline is set to provide vital links within the DRC, facilitating the movement of people and goods throughout the country and neighboring regions. Ethiopian Airlines and the DRC government have already signed several important technical agreements to support Air Congo’s operations, including aircraft leases, comprehensive technical support, and systems assistance. Ethiopian Airlines will also be responsible for training Congolese nationals in various roles, including pilots, cabin crew, sales staff, and technicians.
Expanding Ethiopian Airlines' Reach Across Africa
This partnership with the DRC government is part of Ethiopian Airlines' broader strategy to establish multiple hubs across Africa, complementing existing collaborations with ASKY Airlines in Togo, Malawi Airlines, and Zambia Airways. Ethiopian’s Vision 2035 aims to position the airline group among the world’s top 20 most competitive and successful aviation organizations.
Ethiopian Airlines has long been a leader in African aviation, with a fleet of modern and environmentally friendly aircraft, including the Boeing 737s, 777s, and 787s, as well as Airbus A350s. The airline currently serves more than 150 destinations across five continents and has built a reputation for operational efficiency and success. Its forward-thinking approach to expansion and its commitment to quality service have earned Ethiopian Airlines numerous accolades, including the Skytrax "Best Airline in Africa" award for seven consecutive years.
A Strong Future for African Aviation
As Ethiopian Airlines continues to build strategic partnerships across the continent, the launch of Air Congo is a testament to the airline’s dedication to supporting the development of Africa’s aviation industry. Through this collaboration, Ethiopian Airlines not only strengthens its presence in Central Africa but also contributes to the region’s broader goals of economic growth and regional integration.
With its focus on both operational excellence and community development, Ethiopian Airlines is paving the way for a brighter future in African aviation, making it a leader in the global airline industry. As the continent's air travel network expands, Ethiopian Airlines will play a central role in driving connectivity, innovation, and sustainable growth.
