5 signs that indicate you’re not drinking enough water.
We all know water is an essential part of our health. In fact, water occupies over 60% of the human body. Water is crucial for many bodily functions, such as lubricating the joints, delivering oxygen throughout the body, preventing kidney damage, and more. While we all know that water is essential for our overall health and well-being, many of us are bad at drinking enough water.
I must confess I’m one of those people. No matter how fancy my water bottle is, at the end of the day, there’s still water in it. According to studies, we have to drink at least two liters of water per day, and I am very convinced that there are many people like me who don't take this seriously.
There are however tell-tale signs that you are not drinking enough water. Here are signs that indicate that it’s time for you to have more water.
A dry mouth.
One of the first signs of dehydration is a dry or sticky mouth. When we are adequately hydrated, our saliva helps to keep our mouth moist, helps us digest our food and keeps the mouth, nose, and eyes moist. This prevents friction and damage. Drinking water also keeps the mouth clean. Consuming water instead of sweetened beverages can also reduce tooth decay. Therefore, insufficient water intake can cause a decrease in saliva production, resulting in a dry sensation in your mouth and difficulties in digestion.
Headache and Dizziness.
Dehydration can manifest as frequent headaches and dizziness. Water helps to regulate blood pressure and ensure proper blood flow to the brain. You may also experience a very specific form of dizziness called vertigo. If you're dealing with vertigo, you may feel like everything around you is spinning. Not drinking enough water can cause blood vessels to constrict, resulting in headaches.
Dark Coloured Urine.
The colour of your urine can give you a clear indication of your hydration levels. If you aren't drinking enough water, your urine may be darker in colour than usual. When your body is properly hydrated, your urine is clear or pale yellow.
Fatigue.
When the body lacks sufficient hydration, it can lead to fatigue. Water is vital for maintaining the balance of bodily fluids, including blood, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells. As dehydration sets in, your blood pressure drops, leading to poor circulation and reduced blood flow to your brain. This causes feelings of sleepiness.
Dry skin and lips.
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and requires proper hydration to maintain its elasticity and overall health. Lack of water can lead to dry, flaky skin, and chapped lips. Moisture loss occurs when the body doesn't have enough water to support its functions adequately.
So dear readers, let's take a resolution today to be intentional about drinking water. To stay consistent, we can set reminder alarms in between.
